Amoskeag was founded in 1825 by Samuel Slater and others, with mills in Manchester, New Hampshire, and corporate headquarters in Boston, Mass. It was incorporated in 1831 and became one of the largest producers of cotton cloth in the world. It closed in bankruptcy in 1935, and its assets were taken over by Amoskeag Industries, formed by a group of Manchester citizens and businesses to act as a holding company and real estate broker for the bankrupt manufacturer. Anna Dorothy Mason was a native of Grafton, New Hampshipre. Having completed public school, she studied the classics at the Thetford Academy in Vermont. In 1851 the Mason family was facing financial problems, and Anna Dorothy left the academy to get a job at a cotton mill in Manchester, New Hampshire. She worked at the Manchester Corporation and Amoskeag Corporation until 1856, when she married William D. Bronson and moved to Greensborough, Vermont where she resided until her death in 1910. ...
